We’ve seen a lot of news recently about 3d maps, especially with the announcement that Apple won’t be continuing with Google Maps. Even Google upgraded their mapping system on the Android platform. Today, we just heard that Amazon is going to be diving into the 3d mapping technology with the recent purchase of UpNext. The purchase was dealt at 2.5 million dollars and it is just enough to get Amazon deep into the mapping and geographical analysis market. There have been rumours already that Amazon might be including their new mapping engine on their new tablets, but nothing is confirmed yet.

The UpNext mapping technology has a database of fifty cities, with perfect street navigation and building representation. You can say that Amazon got a good deal, as they have a solid mapping foundation which they just need to work on, in order to improve. Apple seems like they are well underway with their new 3d maps, as they have completely cut ties with Google. A huge part of this share (16.8% to be exact) is held by Amazon, a company which only sells one tablet – the Kindle Fire.
