IDC have published some interesting statistics about the tablet market recently and, although the data is far from surprising, we were quite excited to see the official numbers. Of course, the iPad is still in the lead, but it’s market share has fallen from 61.5% to 54.7% in just one quarter, Android-powered tablets have managed to cover 44.6% of the market. A huge part of this share (16.8% to be exact) is held by Amazon, a company which only sells one tablet – the Kindle Fire. Samsung is the third most popular company in the segment with a 5.8% market share.
The massive success of the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet may actually be the reason for Apple to eventually release a smaller iPad – a rumors, which has been spreading all over the web lately. Overall in Q4, 28.2 million tablets were sold, which shows a 155% increase from last year and a 56.1% increase from Q3.
