Telefonica To Offer A Smartphone Running Mozilla’s Platform

During the Mobile World Congress, Mozilla announced, that they’re going to partner with Telefonica in the development and distribution of their new web-based mobile platform. Later this year devices, using Qualcomm chips, are going to be introduced, running on the so called Open Web Devices operating system, which is based on Mozilla’s Boot2Gecko project. The company is actually using Linux as a base for their platform, but with the Gecko engine, used in Firefox, to take care of the application and interface rendering.

Mozilla showing off a prototype smartphone running Boot2Gecko

Most of you probably don’t know about this, but Mozilla and LG are working on a new mobile OS, called Boot2Gecko, which was expected to be revealed at the Mobile World Congress. The companies didn’t disappoint – the platform was shown on a working prototype smartphone, which surprisingly wasn’t an LG one. Boot2Gecko has a very interesting concept as a platform – it’s main idea is to be a web-based mobile OS, which uses only HTML5, but users are still going to be able to use it even without internet connection.
