The EU going to investigate Motorola Mobility over patents

The European Commission has started two formal antitrust investigations against Motorola Mobility, in order to establish the way the company is using their patents. The procedures have resulted from complaints, coming from Apple and Microsoft, which claim, that Motorola are abusing some of their patents, which are vital for the mobile industry and are in the base of current lawsuits, concerning the iPhone, iPad Windows and Xbox. According to Apple and Microsoft, the patents are being used for distortion of the competition, though the beginning of the procedures hasn’t given us any information for the final decision, which is going to result from the investigations. The European Union is also going to have to look into the possibility of Motorola offering unfair conditions for the sharing of their patents and not following the rules of FRAND (fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory) licensing.
