Some of the former Nokia members, who were part of the original team behind the N9, created Jolla – a company, which is going to try and continue the device’s legacy and keep on making MeeGo smartphones. The first device might even be revealed by the end of the year and we can honestly say we hope it is. Jolla, which was created about an year ago, is actually participating in the Nokia Bridge program, which is intended to stimulate and help former company employees to start a “solo” career by offering them €25 000 if they decide to try out as an entrepreneur.
The CEO of Jolla has stated in a recent interview for the Wall Street Journal, that the company is already contacting hardware manufacturers and they’re planning on releasing their first device in the next 6 months. In order to do so, they’re going to need to raise €10 million from private investors and they’re going to need to sell at least 50 000 – 100 000 devices in order to turn out even. Jolla is currently quite a small company – with just about 50 employees (though they’re aiming to double them by the end of they year) , but their CEO reckons, that the smartphone market is ready for something new and there are still a lot of people, for whom the current options are not enough (such as the fans of the MeeGo platform).
