Whether or not the phones, which are currently running Windows Phone 7 OS are going to get an update to the new version of WP, which is expected to be released this fall, is a question, which has troubled the minds of quite a lot of users for the past few months and, sadly, still hasn’t been answered clearly. Microsoft has remained silent on this topic, though some kind of statement is expected to be released at the conference, at which they’re going to introduce us to the next version of their platform, which is going to be held on the 20th of this month. Meanwhile some information has leaked, which is supposed to be coming from inside sources at Nokia and Microsoft, claiming that even though they won’t actually get an update to Windows Phone 8, the devices, which are currently running Windows Phone 7 will still receive a lot of the platform’s features via another special update package.

It remains unknown what this update pack will include, but the phones are expected to remain with the Windows Phone 7 kernel, though the number of the update will probably be 7.6 or 7.7. According to the rumors, the main reason for these phones to not get WP8 are their hardware limitations. After all Windows Phone 8 is expected to use the same kernel as the PC version of Windows 8, while the current versions of Windows Phone are using an extra light version of Windows CE, which has lower hardware requirements.
