Samsung Exynos 5 Octa – Video Overview and Demonstration of ARM big.LITTLE

ARM big.LITTLE Technology Used in Exynos 5 Octa

Exynos 5 Octa with ARM big.LITTLE technology

Here is the official video demonstration and overview of the Samsung’s first 8-core processor – the new Exynos 5 Octa with ARM big.LITTLE technology.

As we have noted, the new Exynos 5 Octa processor is based on two groups of four cores – Cortex A15 for maximum performance and Cortex A7 for everyday tasks. This approach allows the company to reduce the energy consumption by up to 70% compared to the dual-core Exynos 5 Dual, which relies on Cortex A15 chip.

LITTLE – Cortex A7:

  • Most energy-efficient applications processor from ARM
  • Simple, in-order, 8 stage pipeline

big – Cortex A15:

  • Highest performance in mobile power envelope
  • Complex, out-of-order, multi-issue pipeline

The best of both – seamless pairing of Cortex A15 and Cortex A7:

  • Transparent to applications and middleware
  • Compatible with current OS mechanisms
  • Tuning of power management policies
  • Coherent Interconnect enables tight coupling
  • Common interrupt control for simplified software
  • Software-driven task migration in microseconds
