Samsung Epic is Sprint’s second 4G phone

Sprint and Samsung have officially announced the Samsung Epic, which will stand alongside the HTC EVO 4G in Sprint’s quickly-growing 4G line-up. The Samsung Epic, which Samsung is describing as a “Galaxy S smartphone”, is a monster on paper. The Epic is 14.2 millimeters thick and features the less obtrusive TouchWiz 3.0, Samsung’s exclusive 4″ Super AMOLED screen, front and rear-facing cameras, 802.11 n, and Samsung’s 1GHz Hummingbird processor. The phone is styled differently than AT&T’s Captivate and T-Mobile’s Vibrant, as it shares some styling cues with its predecessor, the Samsung Moment.

The 5.0 megapixel rear camera has an LED flash and is capable of recording videos at 720p. The Epic will ship with a 1500mAh battery, which appears to be Sprint’s standard for their new line of smartphones. Sprint’s official webpage for the Epic states that the phone features a 6-axis accelerometer for increased responsiveness during games and will also ship with Swype pre-installed. Interestingly, the webpage also mentions that the phone will have access to e-books from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Skiff and Kobo.
