Qualcomm have decided to rename their mobile processor series, so that users distinguish them more easily. There are now 4 categories – S1, S2, S3 and yes, you’ve guessed it – S4. The S1 series features processors running at less than 1 GHz with limited performance. The processors from the S2 family have a clock-speed of up to 1.4 GHz and will support HD video recording and playback. The S3 family includes gaming-oriented dual-core processors with a frequency of 1.5 GHz with good multitasking capabilities. They will also support HDMI out, 5.1 stereo sound and 3D recording and playback. The S4 series features quad-core processors running at 1.6 up to 2.4 gHz. At the moment there are 125 devices with a S1, S2 or S3 series chip and we’re expecting S4 devices on the market by Q2 in 2012. B.A.
