Android becoming more popular, Windows Phone shares its success
In the first few months of 2012 Android has managed to increase its market share even more, according to the results from a research, which was quoted by Reuters. This growth has been achieved thanks to the new models of companies, such as Samsung and HTC, which keep on pressuring Nokia and Research in Motion. The results also show, that for the 12 weeks until the middle of March, Android has managed to gain impressive popularity in some of Europe’s largest markets, such as Spain, Italy and Germany. The percentage of devices, which use Google’s platform, sold in the first two countries is respectively 72% and 49% ,while in the latter it has managed to reach 62%. Apple, on the other hand, have also increased their market share in the US and UK (thanks to the 4S) , but the company is losing their positions in Europe.
Meanwhile Windows Phone is also increasing its market share, because of Nokia’s decision to use Microsoft’s OS instead of their own one. The platform’s market share in Germany has more than double – reaching 6%, and it has also increased in the US, UK, France and Italy, though, its share in those countries is currently around 3-4%. This means, that Windows Phone is finally ahead of BlackBerry OS in the States after RIM’s platform lost a huge part of its market share going down from 9% to just 3%. B. A.

Samsung’s strategy for Windows Phone 8 includes attacking Nokia
When the new versions of Microsoft’s mobile and PC platform are released later this year, Samsung are planning on including them in their portfolio and using them against Nokia. At least that’s what the latest rumors state. According to them, Samsung are planning on releasing both tablets and smartphones with Windows (Phone) 8, some of which are going to be identical to the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Note. It’s still unclear whether the software for the stylus is going to be incorporated in the OS itself or Samsung will have to add it themselves. It’s possible that Samsung’s first Windows Phone 8 smartphone is called the Focus 2 and some of its supposed specifications are a 4.7″ HD display, dual-core processor, 12MP camera with a dedicated shutter button and NFC and LTE capabilities.
The rumors also suggest, that we’re going to see two tablets, running Windows 8, with displays of 11″ and 14″, as the latter is even said to come in a modification with a slide-out keyboard. Samsung’s series of Windows Phone 8 smartphones is rumored to be called “Focus” (a name, which has so far only been used in the US) and it’s going to be sold alongside the Galaxy series. B. A.

Snotify – silences notification sounds on your Windows Phone device
Snotify is an application that let you set up a schedule on your Windows Phone device for when Notification sounds should be disabled. You can set different schedules for email, texts and some other notifications. At the moment you can only set one schedule that will apply every day, it may be changed in the near future to add schedules based on the day of the week, just like the built-in alarm.
This app relies on a background task to toggle the setting. Unless the “Resource Intensive Task” is allowed to run it may take up to 30 minutes for the application to react.

Skype 1.0 for Windows Phone now available – not a beta anymore!
Skype 1.0 supports devices with Windows Phone 7.5 and offers voice and video calls over Wi-Fi or 3G connection. Among the new features is the option to search and add contacts and calls to fixed phones. Sadly, the app cannot work in the background, so it can be used only when its open. Other features are an option for video calls in portrait mode and additional options for managing contacts as acceptance of invitations, blocking and unblocking. So far, it seems that the new version of Skype is not available for low-end devices with Windows Phone Tango and 256MB RAM (the app requires 512MB of RAM). However, this can be fixed in the next version.
Microsoft is expected to integrate Skype more seriously in the next version of its mobile platform – Windows Phone 8. According to a recent information, Skype will continue to exist as a standalone application, and we are hoping to get the missing function to work in the background – this is already available in a few apps such as Tango.

Will current Windows Phone powered devices be updated to Windows Phone 8?
One of the most interesting topics concerning Windows Phone is the one about the soon-to-come update and which devices are going to receive it. Although Microsoft have made an official statement on the subject, it wasn’t all that clear, whether or not all current smartphones are going to receive the new version of Microsoft’s mobile OS, which is currently known as Windows Phone 8 – Apollo, so the question remains. According to a Microsoft employee, the update is going to be available for every WP device out there.
The interesting thing is, though, that he has quoted an official statement, which later turned out to never have been made. The Verge, on the other hand, have received information from a trusted source, that such an update has not been planned and although it’s very likely, that Microsoft include some of the elements of Windows Phone Apollo in other update packages, intended for the phones, which won’t get the real deal, the major update itself is going to be available for less devices. Guess we’re going to have to wait and see who’s right. B. A.
