Applications that were made for Windows Mobile 6 are compatible with Windows Phone 7 Series. The interface of the new mobile operating system has been changed though, so the user interface for these applications will have to be changed as well.
“So there is no reason why programs written for Windows Mobile 6 cannot run on the new version of the OS”, said Maarten Sonneveld of Microsoft Netherlands to Tweakers.net. “The interface is complete different though, so the applications will have to be changed somewhat before being ready for Windows Phone 7 Series”.

What about multitasking in Windows Phone 7 Series?
So here’s the story on multitasking in Windows Phone 7. According to the director of Windows Phone:
The core operating system is a modern multitasking operating system. If you play music for example, the music will play back as you navigate around the experience…if you’re using email, we have great support for push email and that happens in the background.
For third party applications—we’ll get into a lot more detail on this in MIX—but we have a few ways we’re going to make sure that third parties can bring their value to the user even when the app is not running. Live tiles are an example. Data feeds in the hubs are another example for some apps.

Windows Phone 7 Series keyboard preview

The default keyboard of Windows Mobile has gone mostly unchanged for about ten years, so it’s nice to see Microsoft innovative a little bit on Windows Mobile 7. To start, the keyboard on Windows Phone 7 Series is similar to that of the Zune HD, but improved. It has autocorrect, but an autocorrect similar to what you would find on a full computer. When you misspell a word, you tap on it, and on the top of the keyboard you will get suggestions. Tapping on a suggested word will replace the incorrect word.

It looks like Microsoft’s attempt to cover up the naming scheme for Windows Mobile 7 prior to the unveiling at Mobile World Congress has been futile. The banner was caught, with some translucent covering, that reveals the name Windows Phone 7 Series.

Another Windows Mobile 7 rumor

Here is interesting batch of rumors about Windows Mobile published by MobileCrunch – a publication owned by respectable TechCrunch:
Now for the nuts and bolts: Windows Mobile 7 has no background processing and will use an Apple-like notification service. There is no system resource access and no threaded processes. In fact, there is no customization at all.
Windows Mobile 7 will not run 6.x code. End of story. It is based on Silverlight and .Net. Everything save a few basic programs will not work under Windows Mobile 7. There is no expectation that this will be a “business device” and the focus is currently on games including some XBox Live functionality for gaming and messaging.

Windows Mobile 7 it’s based on Windows CE 7

Contrary to prior rumors that applications or programs developed for Windows Mobile 6.x and earlier would not be compatible with Microsoft’s next generation Windows Mobile 7 OS–yet to be released–it seems that the latest rumors point to apps being compatible. Furthermore, Windows Mobile 7 will be developed on a Windows CE core according to WMPowerUser. An anonymous source has confirmed with WMPU that Windows Mobile 7 will be based on a new Windows CE 7 core, code named Chelan, which brings a number of features including dual-core CPU support, Internet Explorer 7 protocols with plug-ins, DLNA, and WiFi positioning.
Dual-core CPU support would definitely jive well with Qualcomm’s dual-core Snapdragon, which debuted at CES and tops out at 1.5 GHz currently; the company also makes a single-core 1.3 GHz CPU. Internet Explorer Mobile currently on 6.5 and later is based on IE6; IE7 on Windows Mobile 7 and CE 7 should bring the latest in internet browsing security and compatibility.
