Samsung’s strategy for Windows Phone 8 includes attacking Nokia
When the new versions of Microsoft’s mobile and PC platform are released later this year, Samsung are planning on including them in their portfolio and using them against Nokia. At least that’s what the latest rumors state. According to them, Samsung are planning on releasing both tablets and smartphones with Windows (Phone) 8, some of which are going to be identical to the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Note. It’s still unclear whether the software for the stylus is going to be incorporated in the OS itself or Samsung will have to add it themselves. It’s possible that Samsung’s first Windows Phone 8 smartphone is called the Focus 2 and some of its supposed specifications are a 4.7″ HD display, dual-core processor, 12MP camera with a dedicated shutter button and NFC and LTE capabilities.
The rumors also suggest, that we’re going to see two tablets, running Windows 8, with displays of 11″ and 14″, as the latter is even said to come in a modification with a slide-out keyboard. Samsung’s series of Windows Phone 8 smartphones is rumored to be called “Focus” (a name, which has so far only been used in the US) and it’s going to be sold alongside the Galaxy series. B. A.

Windows 8 preparing for an aggressive attack against the iPad
Microsoft and their partners are planning on launching an aggressive attack on Apple’s iPad and its market share this fall, according to new information, which recently appeared online. That’s when the next generation of Windows – 8, is going to be released and Microsoft and Intel are stimulating big mobile device manufacturers to assault Apple.
Currently the iPad has about a 70% share of the tablet market, but if Windows 8 turns out to be a success, Microsoft reckon it can be brought down to 50% by the middle of next year. By this year’s end we should see more than 30 tablets with this new platform with prices starting at less than $300, so there is definitely a huge potential. Still, judging by Windows Phone current state, even innovative platforms with a friendly and simple user interface sometimes turn out to be unsuccessful. B. A.

Intel shows off a tablet/laptop hybrid running Windows 8
During the IDF 2012 event, which was recently held in China, Intel managed to surprise the audience by reveling an interesting device – hybrid between a tablet and a laptop, which is running Windows 8. The gadget is known as Cove Point, though until recently it was called Letexo. It’s actually a very interesting concept (though in all fairness, not really a new one – the ASUS EeePad Slider has quite a similar form-factor) – the device can be viewed as a normal, albeit thick, tablet, but as soon as you swipe the screen (12.5″ in diagonal) up and reveal the QWERTY keyboard underneath, it becomes a laptop and a powerful one at that, thanks to its Ivy Bridge processor.
When we can expect to see such a device remains unknown, but Microsoft have recently said to have taken a major part in the design of a series of ultrabooks, running the latest version of their OS and one of them might just be the Cove Point. B. A.

Microsoft have officially announced the name of the next OS
Up until now, Microsoft hadn’t actually announced the name of their much expected OS – everyone was just sort of assuming, that it’s called Windows 8. Well now it has been confirmed…sort of. The next generation of Windows is going to come in (just) 3 editions, one of which is going to be called Windows RT and will only be used on devices with ARM-based chips (read tablets). This version is only going to come pre-installed on such devices and won’t be sold separately. A unique feature it’s going to offer is the touch-optimized Microsoft Office, which is vital to a big part of Microsoft’s target group.
The other two versions are both going to be used with x86 processors and are called Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro. As you have probably figured out, they’re both going to be the same basic software, but the latter is going to come with more features aimed specifically at business users. It’s going to support encryption of the file system, Remote Desktop (host) and similar features, which the avarage user doesn’t need.
All 3 version of the new Windows will support both keyboard and mouse and touch-screens as input methods with the choice down to the user, to decide which would suit his purposes best. B. A.

Microsoft testing Windows Phone 8 with dual-core processors
We are still waiting for Microsoft to release the official Windows Phone Tango update, which must happen in the coming weeks, but the company also continues to work on a later versions of the platform. So far, there is no any official information about the upcoming Windows Phone 8, but some details of its existence continue to appears on the Internet.
WPCentral confirmed that the testing of Windows Phone 8 is started at Microsoft in late March. The Finnish site Italehti.fi also wrote that Windows Phone 8 will debut in October and given the fact that Nokia World will be held during the last days of September, then the probability of the Finnish company to present its phones with the new platform is very high.
In fact, by the stronger partnership with Microsoft, we would not be surprised if Nokia is the first company to present the new mobile OS. Windows Phone 8 will be the first major renovation of the Microsoft’s mobile platform from its debut in 2010 and will bring different technologies from Windows 8 – the support of multi-core processors, operating at higher screen resolutions, LTE and NFC capabilities and some other cool stuff.

The Snapdragon S4 to appear in ultra thin laptops
Rob Chandhok, the senior vice president of Qualcomm, has said in a recent interview, that we should be expecting ultrabooks, running Windows 8 and using Snapdragon quad-core chips, to be released later this year. The devices are going to compete with the MacBook Air and will be both lighter and thinner than it. With this statement, Rob has also confirmed that ARM processors are going to be found in other devices running Windows 8 as well as tablets.
The quad-core Snapdragon S4 chips, made using 28nm technology are expected to be powerful enough even for games and more demanding programs, but then again, their main advantage is power-efficiency. Sadly none of the programs, which are written for the older versions of Windows are going to work with this processor, but Microsoft have promised to rewrite their most popular tools and programs, such as their Office. Other manufacturers are also expected to reveal ARM-based Windows 8 laptops and if sales pick up, developers are bound to start writing more and more programs for them. B. A.

Are we Going to See E-book Readers Running Windows 8?
Microsoft haven’t been very secretive of their plans to create a single ecosystem , which could unite all of the devices, such as phones, tablets, computers, laptops and so on, but are they also planning to go even further, are we going to see e-book readers and TVs running Windows 8? According to the most recent rumors, that is exactly what the future holds for Microsoft’s platform and some even say, that the company is already working on e-book readers, running their OS and, of course, using the Metro interface. This is actually quite a smart move, considering the popularity of these devices in the last couple of years. Of course, this rumor begs the question about the possible cost of licensing Windows 8 for such a gadget, which, after all, has to be cheap enough for people to buy. B. A.

Windows 8 is Coming This October
According to trusted sources, Microsoft are planning to finish the work on Windows 8 in the Summer and to finally release the platform this October. The first wave of devices, using the new OS is going to feature both ARM-based and Intel x86 chips, but the latter are going to be much more popular – from an overall of about 50 devices, just about 5 are going to use ARM-based chips (3 of those are going to be Windows 8 tablets) and more than 40 – Intel’s chips. This is most likely due to Microsoft’s tighter grip on the hardware and overall technical specifications of the devices.
Microsoft, on the other hand, still haven’t announced an official release date for Windows 8, but a possible launch in October would let them take full advantage of the holiday season, when people generally spend a lot of money. The company is expected to hold an event in the beginning of April, on which it might also reveal its plans for the future of their platform and their marketing strategy for it. More details about Windows Phone 8
We’re hoping for Microsoft to release additional interesting details about the future of their mobile platform (the Tango and Apollo updates, to be exact) at the Mobile Congress in Barcelona, but meanwhile, some additional pieces of information are leaking throughout the web. According to them, Windows Phone Apollo is going to be revealed at the Congress, just like Mango was, one year earlier. The update is supposed to bring some serious changes to the platform and even replace the current kernel (Windows Embedded Compact) with something a bit more up-to-date, such as MinWin, which might help Microsoft in the integration between Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 – the computer and mobile versions of Windows. Similar information has also appeared on a Russian forum, according to which not only is Windows Phone 8 going to use a Windows NT kernel, but it’ll also share a lot of the Windows 8 base elements, which should really help bring the platforms closer together.
Even though Apollo is expected to look more or less the same as Mango, the developers are definitely going to feel the difference, as porting programs from Windows 8 to Windows Phone and the other way round is going to be made very easy – according to Microsoft, it’s going to be just a matter of rewriting one line. Other interesting changes include support for NFC technology and even support for processors using x86 architecture, which sounds great.
According to another source, the minimal requirements for Windows Phone 8 include dual-core Qualcomm Krait processor and display with 1280×720 resolution, which is a giant step forward from Tango, which supports even 480 x 320 displays and still uses a Windows CE7 core. B. A.

More details on Windows 8
At the end of 2011, Microsoft announced, that they were going to lock the bootloader of the future Windows 8 devices, which didn’t appeal to the users, because of the restrictions it would bring, such as the inability to install another OS on the device, such as a Linux distribution.
As a response, Microsoft announced, that there’s going to be a way to disable s-boot and install whatever OS you want, but only on devices with x86 processors – ones, using an ARM architecture won’t support alternative OS’.
Microsoft also announced the official minimal technical specs required for Windows 8 to run on a tablet:
They include a 5-point digitizer, 5 buttons (Power, Rotation lock, Windows Key, Volume up and Volume down), a new Ctrl + Alt + Del combination (Windows Key + Power), 10GB of free user-available memory, 1366×768 resolution, 720p camera and at least one USB 2.0 port. B. A.
