The iPad with 68% market share
There can’t really be anyone, who doubts the iPad’s current state as the most popular device on the tablet market and the data published by IDC proves this fact once again. The company have revealed their statistics for tablet sales in the first quarter of 2012, during which Apple’s device has managed to increase its market share up to 68%, despite the fact, that the total number of devices sold has went down from 15,4 million to 11,8 million.
In comparison, at the end of last year, the iPad has had a market share of 54,7% At this point, you might be wondering at whose expense Apple are increasing their market share and, if that’s the case, you should probably take a closer look at Amazon’s results. Despite the 16,8% market share, which the Kindle Fire had just months ago (at the end of last year) , the device is responsible for just 4% of the tablet sales for Q1 of 2012, which sets it in third position. Between Amazon and Apple stands, of course, the Korean giant – Samsung, while the fourth and fifth places are held by Lenovo and Barnes&Noble with their Nook. B. A.

RIM revealed BlackBerry OS 10
In the past few months fate hasn’t been kind no RIM and they were losing market positions about as fast as Nokia, who are currently switching from Symbian to Windows Phone. The Canadians, though, are betting everything on just one card – the new BlackBerry OS 10, which is going to debut later this year along with a new series of devices, running on it. At the BlackBerry World event in Orlando RIM officially revealed the platform and for the first time shared some details about it. The OS itself is based on QNX – the same software can be found in the PlayBook, but is, of course, optimized for smartphones. The company’s tablet is also going to receive an update to the platform later this year.
One of the key features, on which RIM focused at the event, were the gestures, which allow the user to quickly access documents, apps and events notifications. Of course, being so popular with their near-perfect QWERTY devices, the Canadians have also had to work on making a remarkable onscreen keyboard. The one, featured in BlackBerry OS 10, is going to rely on enhanced algorithms for touchscreen typing and is even going to learn the user’s habits with time. The keyboard also includes a special word predicting technology and allows for quick access to symbols through gestures.

Tim Cook against tablet/laptop hybrids
The concept of a device, which can be transformed from a standalone tablet to a full-feature laptop isn’t anything new and thanks to devices, such as the Transformer Prime, it has became quite popular in the last ear or so. Despite the users’ obvious interest towards such gadgets, though, Tim Cook – the current CEO of Apple, doesn’t think such devices are good for the users. During a conference conversation, after announcing the company’s financial results from the first quarter of 2012, Cook shared his thoughts on such devices, which work as both a tablet and a laptop and according to him they’re not convenient enough. Later, when asked what he thinks about Microsoft and Intel’s strategy about encouraging manufacturers to make touchscreen ultrabooks, he said, that Apple currently has no intention of making such devices. Microsoft patenting a solution for a second-screen on mobile devices
Microsoft have patented an interesting solution for a second screen on a mobile device – for instance smartphone or tablet. The general idea, of course, isn’t anything revolutionary with dual-screen devices currently available on the market, but Microsoft’s implementation is a bit different. Their idea is for devices to have a second screen, which uses less power (E-Ink display, for instance) and shows different types of information depending on its position, in comparison to you – whether its facing you or the other way, for example.
The images, which were used by Microsoft to describe their idea, show that the second (low-power) display is actually positioned on the back side of the device and according to the description, it’s going to remain active no matter if the device itself is unlocked or not – this would, of course, make it perfect to check the time or something else and the good this is, that because of the E-Ink technology it would hardly alter your device’s battery life. This idea actually sounds very promising, so we’re hoping, that it’s implemented in future Windows Phone (and maybe other?) devices. B. A.

Windows 8 preparing for an aggressive attack against the iPad
Microsoft and their partners are planning on launching an aggressive attack on Apple’s iPad and its market share this fall, according to new information, which recently appeared online. That’s when the next generation of Windows – 8, is going to be released and Microsoft and Intel are stimulating big mobile device manufacturers to assault Apple.
Currently the iPad has about a 70% share of the tablet market, but if Windows 8 turns out to be a success, Microsoft reckon it can be brought down to 50% by the middle of next year. By this year’s end we should see more than 30 tablets with this new platform with prices starting at less than $300, so there is definitely a huge potential. Still, judging by Windows Phone current state, even innovative platforms with a friendly and simple user interface sometimes turn out to be unsuccessful. B. A.

Intel shows off a tablet/laptop hybrid running Windows 8
During the IDF 2012 event, which was recently held in China, Intel managed to surprise the audience by reveling an interesting device – hybrid between a tablet and a laptop, which is running Windows 8. The gadget is known as Cove Point, though until recently it was called Letexo. It’s actually a very interesting concept (though in all fairness, not really a new one – the ASUS EeePad Slider has quite a similar form-factor) – the device can be viewed as a normal, albeit thick, tablet, but as soon as you swipe the screen (12.5″ in diagonal) up and reveal the QWERTY keyboard underneath, it becomes a laptop and a powerful one at that, thanks to its Ivy Bridge processor.
When we can expect to see such a device remains unknown, but Microsoft have recently said to have taken a major part in the design of a series of ultrabooks, running the latest version of their OS and one of them might just be the Cove Point. B. A.

Toshiba’s 13,3″ tablet – Excite 13
Toshiba seems to have really focused on the US tablet market. Or at least that’s what comes to mind when you see their latest products – three tablets with different screen sizes, which are part of the same family – Excite. The devices have 7.7″, 10.1″ and 13.3″ (yes, thirteen) displays. According to Toshiba a tablet with such a big screen is actually just what most people need. The company has conducted a research and the results showed, that most tablet users generally use their devices at home – so why not make the screen a bit bigger and more comfortable to use?
Of course, this is just their theory – whether or not it turns out to be true is something we’ll just have to wait to find out. This is going to happen on 10.06, when the Toshiba Excite 13 and 7.7 are going to hit the market (with prices starting at $650 and $500 respectively). The Excite 10 is going to hit the market a bit earlier – on 06.05 for $450 (for the 16GB model). You can see the devices’ specifications at http://us.toshiba.com/bts2012-announce B.A.

The Lenovo IdeaTab S2109
Lenovo have systematically increased their Android tablet portfolio and they are already offering devices in all of the different basic categories, aimed, of course, at different target users. The company’s latest products is called the IdeaTab S2109 and behind this, rather unimpressive name, stands a beautiful 8.9mm thin tablet with a unibody shell.
What kind of processor the device uses is still a mystery, but some other interesting technical details have been released – the Lenovo IdeaTab S2109 is powered by Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich has a 9.7″ 4:3 display with a resolution of 1024 x 768 (remind you of anything?) and a 1.3MP front-facing camera. The tablet also has 4 speakers, which should make for nice sound and a microHDMI port. Its battery is sais to last as long as 10 hours of usage, quite impressive, especially for an Android tablet. The release date and starting price have sadly not been announced yet, but they should be released quite soon. B. A.

The Google tablet delayed until July
Google have promised to release a tablet of their own by the end of this year, but it seems the project is going as planned. According to the last piece of (unofficial) information, the debut of the device is going to be in the recent future. According to the rumors, the event was scheduled to be held this May, but it was then delayed, because there is still much work to be done – the current price of the components is about $250, which is way above the target price, at which Google want to sell it – between $150 and $200.
This means, that additional changes have to be made in both the design and the hardware of the tablet and it’s also why the release of the tablet is rumored to have been pushed back for July. Google’s first tablet is also rumored to feature a Tegra 3 processor and a 7″ display, and to be running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Such a price, combined with these specifications would confirm the information, that this tablet is going to be more of a competitor of the Kindle Fire than to Apple’s iPad. B. A.

Are we Going to See E-book Readers Running Windows 8?
Microsoft haven’t been very secretive of their plans to create a single ecosystem , which could unite all of the devices, such as phones, tablets, computers, laptops and so on, but are they also planning to go even further, are we going to see e-book readers and TVs running Windows 8? According to the most recent rumors, that is exactly what the future holds for Microsoft’s platform and some even say, that the company is already working on e-book readers, running their OS and, of course, using the Metro interface. This is actually quite a smart move, considering the popularity of these devices in the last couple of years. Of course, this rumor begs the question about the possible cost of licensing Windows 8 for such a gadget, which, after all, has to be cheap enough for people to buy. B. A.
