screenshot1ir2 Battery capacity calculator app for Windows Mobile

Amazing little app for Windows Mobile to calculate the capacity of rechargeable batteries by converting Wh to mAh and mAh to Wh. Great for projects. This allows you to know how batteries compare to each other even when capacity is not listed in the same format.

ICS Control is a GUI front-end for Internet Connection Sharing, a component of Microsoft Windows Mobile. It can be configured to do a variety of things including sharing your cellular internet connection over an adhoc WiFi network.

Requirements: .NET Compact Framework 2.0 and Windows Mobile 5 or later with the IPNAT driver included (most WM6 builds have this built-in). The “Internet Sharing” application that some phones have is not required, but IPNAT is.

ICSControl is a single .exe file, included in the zip file below. You can place it directly in /Windows/Start Menu/Programs/ on your device and it will appear as an icon in Programs. Or you can place it elsewhere and create a shortcut.

Acer neoTouch P300 review

April 6th, 2010 No Comments   Posted in News, Reviews

acer2 Acer neoTouch P300 review

The Acer neoTouch P300 is a budget Windows Mobile 6.5.3 slider device that was announced at MWC. It’s got a Qualcomm 528MHz CPU with 256MB of RAM and 512MB of ROM. The screen is 3.2″ and is low resolution at WQVGA. Slashgear has put the £269 (that’s about $400) device through its paces, concluding:

Not much consumer attraction, then, but as a solid business device the P300 doesn’t break the bank or let you down in day to day functionality. It’s easy to become blinkered when faced with the latest and greatest cellphones day in, day out, and lose track of the fact that, for many buyers, basic features are all that’s really needed. Still, we’d probably look to budget Android devices ourselves; the HTC Hero may not have a hardware keyboard, but it’s only £20 (pre-tax) more. Our lasting concern is the longevity of Windows Mobile 6.5.3 – or, more accurately, the lack of it – since there’s no chance that the neoTouch P300 would see an upgrade to Windows Phone 7 later in the year. Nevertheless, even if superseded, the software will still do everything you asked of the P300 on the day you bought it, and there’s a considerable catalog of third-party apps available through the Windows Marketplace for Mobile that won’t run on a WP7 handset. We’d be happier if the P300 had a little more shaved off the price – a sub-£200 SIM-free smartphone would make for a decent argument – but if your ambitions are merely moderate and you’re dedicated to Exchange then the Acer is a reasonable no-frills budget buy.

Windows Mobile 7 aka Photon and Windows Phone 7 series

April 4th, 2010 No Comments   Posted in News, Windows Phone 7 Series

http://pocketnow.com/html/portal/news/0000009482//windows-mobile-7-top.jpgPhoton has been killed about 18 months ago. That’s how long development of Windows Phone 7 took them. 18 months. And that’s why the Windows Phone 7 they’ve shown at MWC looks so unfinished: Because it is.

Photon was the original Windows Mobile 7 project. An evolution of Windows Mobile 6. They were hard at work back then, trying to make Windows Mobile 7 competitive to iPhone OS. Windows Mobile 7 was originally planned to be released in mid 2009.

But at some point, they dumped the whole project and decided to start from scratch. Photon was dead. And Windows “Mobile” was doomed, making way for Windows “Phone”. Instead of Photon, they released Windows Mobile 6.5 in mid 2009, a stop gap release to give them more time to finish their new Windows Phone 7 project.
Well, we all know how that turned out.

Windows Mobile 7 wouldn’t have been much different from other platforms, like Android and iPhone OS. Sure, it would have had much more power user features, but it would have been centered around applications, like the others. It would certainly have gained a significant market share, but no dominance. With Windows Phone 7, instead, Microsoft is aiming higher. But that also means a lot of risk. It means Windows Phone 7 might fail completely. In the end, it will come down to how good they are at getting developers excited about their new platform. That’s where Palm failed, despite having a very compelling platform with webOS. Microsoft might fail the same way, though they have a much better starting position than Palm (more money, more resources, better developing tools).
But Windows Phone 7 is very similar to Vista: Just like they killed the “Longhorn” project, they killed “Photon”, and started from scratch. And just like Vista, what they’re going to release by the end of 2010 will be an unfinished product.

They’re trying to make you think that 7 is their lucky number, but actually, it might turn out that it’s not, and Windows Phone 7 is just like Windows 6 (Vista).

Also, Windows Phone 7 is not that different from Palm’s webOS: When the Palm Pre was released, webOS was a nice looking mobile OS, but lacking features and refinements. And lacking third party applications. Expect the same to happen with Windows Phone 7.

Just a little extension to the Windows Mobile file explorer. When you tap’n'hold on a EXE file then you can add it as shortcut into Start Menu.  The tool should work with any version of Windows Mobile and on any resolution, if you use WM6.5 then the dialog will also appear in finger friendly style!

Usage:

In the explorer context menu will be a new entry “Add to start menu”. Tap it and a window will appear and asks you to select the folder in start menu into which you want to add the app.
