Some of the former Nokia members, who were part of the original team behind the N9, created Jolla – a company, which is going to try and continue the device’s legacy and keep on making MeeGo smartphones. The first device might even be revealed by the end of the year and we can honestly say we hope it is. Jolla, which was created about an year ago, is actually participating in the Nokia Bridge program, which is intended to stimulate and help former company employees to start a “solo” career by offering them €25 000 if they decide to try out as an entrepreneur.

The CEO of Jolla has stated in a recent interview for the Wall Street Journal, that the company is already contacting hardware manufacturers and they’re planning on releasing their first device in the next 6 months. In order to do so, they’re going to need to raise  €10 million from private investors and they’re going to need to sell at least 50 000 – 100 000 devices in order to turn out even. Jolla is currently quite a small company – with just about 50 employees (though they’re aiming to double them by the end of they year) , but their CEO reckons, that the smartphone market is ready for something new and there are still a lot of people, for whom the current options are not enough (such as the fans of the MeeGo platform). Opera Software has also decided to please the owners of the Nokia N9 – here is the latest version of its popular Opera Mobile 11.5 browser for the device. The application is now available at the test products section of the Norwegian company and also can be downloaded for free in the Nokia Store.

Compared to the previous version of Opera Mobile 11 for MeeGo, the changes here includes the ability to automatically rotate the image, corrected operation of the buttons at the bottom of the screen and a dialog box to select a new connection to the Internet if the phone is not online.

Currently, the application cannot use the virtual keyboard on the Nokia N9, but relies on its own keyboard and is not optimized for energy saving – i.e. if you leave it in the background, the Opera browser will continue to drain the battery of your phone. Furthermore, Opera Mobile 11.5 for Nokia N9 now supports Flash videos and HTML5 websites.

Back in November, information leaked about an incoming update for the Nokia N9, which still hasn’t arrived. Still, users probably won’t have to wait long for the update, known as PR1.2, in fact, it might come in a number of days, perhaps along with the Symbian Belle update for the N8 and the other first-generation Symbian^3 devices, which is due to arrive in the beginning of February.

New information about the MeeGo update was posted on talk.maemo.com, according to which, someone received a Nokia N9 with the update preinstalled, thanks to which pretty much everything worth knowing about the update is is now known. There are a lot of changes and some of them are quite important, such as an upgrade of the Camera and Gallery applications, as well as support for folders, such as the ones in iOS and Android. The front-facing camera is also going to receive video-calling functionality, though it’s still unknown whether it’s going to work with 3rd party apps or just the preinstalled Gtalk and Skype clients. MeeGo 1.2

As most of you know, Nokia has officially abandoned MeeGo and is going to use Windows Phone 7 for their future high-end devices. Still, the company is developing software updates for their first and last MeeGo device – the Nokia N9, which was only released a couple of months ago.

Version 1.2 of the platform is going to add quite a few functional new features, such as a new UI for the camera app  and facial recognition. A special button has also been added to control the flash when shooting videos. In this update we’re also expecting to see a new button design and improved multitasking. Sadly, there’s no official information on when the update will be out, but our guess is, you’re going to be enjoying it by the end of the year. B. A.

Straight to the handsets – This first handset is a pretty big deal as not many UK retailers are stocking it – it’s the Nokia N9 Sim Free and MobileFun have it in stock now costing £519.95. The N9 is the first Nokia handset to run MeeGo OS, making it faster and a lot easier to use than previous Nokia phones.

The phone’s got a 3.9″ AMOLED screen and doesn’t have any home buttons on the display, so everything is controlled via touchscreen.  It really is a beautifully designed handset and with features such as the 8MP camera it really sets out to impress. As usual, we can offer you the best mobile phone reviews.

Deliveries of the Nokia N9 have begun

Deliveries of the first and probably (read sadly) last Nokia device to run MeeGo have finally begun. In the next few days everyone, who has pre-ordered one should receive it.

So far there hasn’t been an official price for the device, but Nokia have decided to finally share it with us – the 16 GB model costs €480 and the 64 GB one - €560. It will be sold in three colors – blue, red and black. Sadly the Nokia N9 will be sold in just a few countries, so a lot of customers won’t be able to buy one.

Not too long ago MeeGo was thought of as Nokia’s replacement for Symbian, but because of Elop’s connections to Microsoft, earlier this year the company decided to go with Windows Phone. Still the Nokia N9 is a very impressive phone and a lot of people were amazed by its looks and simplicity. Happy for them, this design will be featured in other Nokia handsets as well. B.A.

We’ve got a price for the upcoming SIM Free Nokia N9 - £519.95 (UK) and to be honest you get quite a lot for your monies.  The N9 is the first Nokia handset to run MeeGo software making it pretty different from previous Nokia handsets. It also has a 3.9″ capacitive AMOLED touchscreen (try saying that really fast), so your screen quality is pretty impressive and the clarity will be perfect. The camera is 8MP and also has HD Video recording and the camera is actually the fastest on any smartphone – so you haven’t got any excuses for not taking pictures when using the Nokia N9.  What I really like about the N9 though is it’s curved design because personally I think it makes it look a lot more stylish and really compliments the fact that the handset doesn’t have a home or a back button – just the touchscreen in all it’s glory!
