The HTC Golf – A Fast Android On A Budget

A photo has recently leaked online, which is supposed to be made using an unknown HTC smartphone, code named Golf. It seems that (much like the car) this device is going to be aimed at people, who want something fast and reliable, but are on a tight budget.

The HTC Golf is also going to be quite small – its display is going to be just 3.5″ and its resolution – HVGA. The processor is most likely going to be clocked at under 1 GHz, but that shouldn’t really be a problem, considering the device is going to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which has better optimization and should thus have no problem running on less powerful hardware. According to the rumors, this smartphone is going to be the successor of the Wildifre S and we should see its official debut in just a couple of months. B. A.

The MOTOLUXE and DEFY MINI from Motorla

Traditionally, Motorola present their new products at CES and this year is no exception – the company has just added a couple of phones to its portfolio. The devices are called MOTOLUXE and DEFY MINI, they both use Android 2.3 Gingerbread and will be released on the European market in February. Another thing the phones have in common is that they both use the MotoSwitch UI, which changes accordingly to your preferences with the help of apps like Social Graph – a feature, which keeps track of your favourite contacts and places them higher on your contacts list and Activity Graph, which does the same for your applications.

The Motorola DEFY MINI as the name suggests is a dust-, water- and scratch-resistant device aimed at young social people, who don’t generally look after their phones very good. The device has a 3.2″ HVGA display covered with Gorilla glass, a 3MP camera with a flash accompanied by a VGA front-facing camera for video calls and a huge 1650 mAh battery, which should be enough for 21 days in stand-by. Some of the other specs are a 600 mHz processor, 512MB of RAM and 512MB of ROM memory and a microSD card slot.

The Motorola MOTOLUXE on the other hand is a stylish mid-range smartphone  with a 4″ screen and an 8MP camera with auto focus. It’s a bit more powerful, thanks to its 800 mHz processor and the 1GB of ROM memory, but also has 512MB of RAM. Its battery is also worse than the one in the DEFY MINI – its capacity is just 1400 mAh. B. A.

Motorola XT531 – another budget phone with Android 2.3 Gingerbread

Motorola is trying to provide consumers with a limited budget available options for the use of smartphone and the latest proof of this is the XT531 model. The device features a 3.5 inch capacitive screen with HVGA resolution, relies on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, Moto Switch Interface and offers two cameras – a major 5MP with autofocus + flash and a front with VGA resolution. The sales of Motorola XT531 starts this month in China, but the company promises that in the autumn will reach selected countries in Europe and South America respectively, the phone will be sold under the name FIRE XT and SPICE XT. Also, later will be available another version of the phone with 2 SIM cards.

Other features of the smartphone are also relevant. It’s powered by processor clocked at 800 MHz and has a battery with capacity of 1540mAh, which goes for 8 hours of talk time or 28 days in standby mode. Motorola XT531 works in dual and quad-EDGE HSDPA networks and has 512MB ROM and 512MB RAM memory, a microSD slot (can add up to 32GB cards), FM radio with RDS, Wi-Fi b / g / n capabilities, and various sensors – compass, accelerometer, GPS and proximity sensors + ambient light. The dimensions of the handset are 114 x 62 x 11,95 mm with weight 114 grams.

Gingerbread theme for Swype (HVGA)

Let’s face it, Swype is ugly and there are not many HVGA themes out there, so here we have a Gingerbread-inspired HVGA Swype theme.

What you need:

1. apk manager (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695701)
2. ADB pull your Swype from /data/app/
3. HxD if you want to modify the color of the tracer line (http://mh-nexus.de/en/hxd/)
4. Swype GB theme files (attached — download and unzip)

How-to install:

1. in apk manager, place Swype apk into folder place-apk-here-for-modding
2. run Script.bat
3. choose 19 (-Select compression level for apks-)
   • choose 0 for compression level
4. choose 22 (-Set current project-)
   • choose the number corresponding to your Swype file
5. choose 9 (-Decompile apk-)
6. go into apkmanager > projects > [app folder name] > assets > keyboards and overwrite Swype keyboard PNGs with themed files.
7. go into apkmanager > projects > [app folder name] > res > drawable and overwrite Swype horizontal selection highlight files with themed files. (these are for landscape mode word suggestions — see screenshot#5)
8. go into apkmanager > projects > [app folder name] > res > drawable-hdpi and overwrite Swype voice input files with themed files. (see screenshot#4)
9. if you want to change the color of the Swype trail:
   • go into apkmanager > projects > [app folder name] > lib > armeabi
   • open libSwypeCore.so in HxD
   • CTRL+F (search) for DD A2 5B
   • find a color you want to use and note it’s HEX value. (IIRC, I used #ffba00)
   • switch values around so that it is B-G-R (mine would be 00 BA FF)
   • replace values and save
   • a .bak file will be created in the directory — delete it
10. when you are finished with all mods, go back to console window and choose 11 (-Compile apk-)
    • choose Y (-is this a system apk-)
    • followed by N (-would you like to copy over any additional files-)
11. choose 12 to sign your apk
12. signed apk is in place-apk-here-for-modding folder
13. uninstall your previous version of Swype before installing this one!

HTC Aria

Vendors from Taiwan, HTC Corporation re-released the wide screen mobile phone, namely HTC Aria EVO 4G with 3.4-inch screen sizes. Wheel – game for Windows Mobile

here is the new platform game for Windows Mobile, playable at Pocket PC 2002 and above (yes, really), so the game is screen resolution independent (you can play on QVGA or WQVGA), however it looks best on the HVGA, VGA and WVGA screens. The most important is that you can press more than one virtual button on your classic resistive screen (as it was capacitive), which makes this type of game comfortably playable even without hardware buttons. There are no levels, there are dimensions. In each dimension, you have to found interdimensional gateway, which takes you to the new dimension, similar to the previous one, or to completely different. Red arrow accelerates the devil (red aura), green arrow slows down him. Green sprout accelerates your wheel (blue aura), but only for limited time. Also, in the beginning of every dimension, you will get little bit of extra speed, just like when you die and are resurrected. To save your game, use X -> SAVE. In main menu, use CG to continue.
