Mozilla’s app store entering beta state
After beginning to take in applications for their HTML5 app store in the beginning of this February, Mozilla Marketplace can already offer its users more than 100 programs. The portal, though, is only available for people. who are using the Nightly version of Firefox 16. The applications themselves are able to run under both OS X and Windows (and, as it seems, even Linux) and the interesting part is they act more like stand-alone programs, rather than browser add-ons, like the ones in Chrome.
For instance, apps, which you have downloaded from the Mozilla Marketplace, will be located in the Windows Start menu, from which they’re going to be able to be launched just like any other program. So far the access to the beta tests is restricted, but if you have actively helped Mozilla in the past, you’ll be allowed to participate in them. If you’re not one of the lucky testers however, you would probably be happy to know, that the store is going to be officially released in just a couple of months. B. A.

Facebook have decided to open up an app store of their own. In their App Center users can find both free and payed version of applications different from the ones, which are popular in the standard version of the social network, as well as HTML5 application, which can be used through the mobile version of Facebook. The App Center is going to become available in the coming weeks and will be usable through both web browsers and the official Facebook applications for iOS and Android. Software developers can start preparing their applications from now, in order to make them compatible with the company’s requirements.
A representative of the company has shared with Venture Beat, that App Center has no intents of competing with Apple’s App Store or the Google Play Store, but on the other hand Facebook might be able to surpass those two companies by being the first to offer a market for premium HTML5 applications. Currently the project is focused on providing users with software, which is strongly integrated with Facebook. The software developers, who want to take part in tests with payed apps, can already sign up for it, but normal users will have to wait just a little bit more. B. A.

The (Symbian) Nokia Belle Feature Pack 1 Update
Along with the Nokia 808 PureView, the next major Symbian update was revealed. Surprisingly it’s not the Carla, as we thought it would, but rather “Belle Feature Pack 1″ , so it’s a sort of update of the Belle update. Still, it features a lot of improvements for both personalisation and performance. The FP1 is going to be available for the 603, 700 and 701 in the recent future and it’s going to bring Dolby Headphone and Dolby Digital Plus support for the devices, providing a better quality of sound, when connecting your device to a home cinema or headphones.

Mozilla showing off a prototype smartphone running Boot2Gecko
Most of you probably don’t know about this, but Mozilla and LG are working on a new mobile OS, called Boot2Gecko, which was expected to be revealed at the Mobile World Congress. The companies didn’t disappoint - the platform was shown on a working prototype smartphone, which surprisingly wasn’t an LG one. Boot2Gecko has a very interesting concept as a platform – it’s main idea is to be a web-based mobile OS, which uses only HTML5, but users are still going to be able to use it even without internet connection.

Mozilla’s HTML5 App Store Now Open for Developers
The news, that Mozilla are working on an application store, appeared online at the end of last year and as it seems, the company is almost ready to launch it. The store is in fact already available for developers and Mozilla are taking in applications. After having seen their Boot2Gecko device at the Mobile World Congress, it was about time for the company to show us the app store as well. As Mozilla have already written on their blog, at least for the time being, the store is going to be focused on mobile applications, which work with HTML5. At the moment the app store is only available for developers, which are expected to send in their applications, but you can expect it to become available for the end-users as early as Q2 this year.
