Memento giving Windows Phone users photographic filters

If Microsoft’s mobile platform has one interesting advantage over its competitors, it has to be the design of the applications – some of them have a simply amazing UI, which is very different from everything you would expect to see on the other platforms and Memento is a good example of such an application. It’s actually a program, with the help of which you can easily put a filter over a shot, which you have just taken or one, which you have just chosen from your gallery and instantly share it in some social network – much like Instagram, though more simplified, due to the fact, that you don’t actually need an account in order to use the application.

So far Memento for Windows Phone only supports sharing on Facebook, as well as directly reading the comments, but the authors have promised to add support for other social services as well. There are also two versions of the application – a free and a paid one, the first one providing you with 5 different filters and the latter giving you access to 9 filters with one additional filter being added each month. Facebook App Store
Facebook App Store

Facebook have decided to open up an app store of their own. In their App Center users can find both free and payed version of applications different from the ones, which are popular in the standard version of the social network, as well as HTML5 application, which can be used through the mobile version of Facebook. The App Center is going to become available in the coming weeks and will be usable through both web browsers and the official Facebook applications for iOS and Android. Software developers can start preparing their applications from now, in order to make them compatible with the company’s requirements.

A representative of the company has shared with Venture Beat, that App Center has no intents of competing with Apple’s App Store or the Google Play Store, but on the other hand Facebook might be able to surpass those two companies by being the first to offer a market for premium HTML5 applications. Currently the project is focused on providing users with software, which is strongly integrated with Facebook. The software developers, who want to take part in tests with payed apps, can already sign up for it, but normal users will have to wait just a little bit more. B. A.

US users prefer using their phones for Facebook

HTC One X with Facebook App

comScore have published some interesting data from a recent research on user’s social networking habits. You probably won’t be surprised to find out most people spend more time on Facebook (and social networks in general) from their mobile devices than they do from computers. The average US user spends 441 minutes (roughly 7,35 hours) a month using the mobile version of Facebook and “just” 391 minutes (~6,5 hours)on the standard version of the social network.

The same tendency is visible with Twitter, Pinterest and Foursquare as well. Such data must be placing some very serious questions before the company, just as they’re (supposedly) getting ready to publicly release their stocks on the market for the first time. Facebook doesn’t actually profit from advertisements on the mobile version of the website, so it must be quite bad for the company to see users using it more and more at the expense of the computer version. Facebook-branded smartphone
Facebook-branded smartphone

HTC and Facebook have been said to be working on a special Facebook-branded smartphone in the past  and even though no new rumors have appeared online recently, according to component manufacturers, which were quoted by DigiTimes, the two companies are in fact working on such a project and we should see the result around the third quarter of 2012. One of the main reasons, why HTC are working with Facebook, is the fact, that Google chose Samsung over them as their partner for both the second and third Nexus devices. The phone, which HTC and Facebook are working on, is said to be running a special platform, which would give the user access to all of the features of the social network. HTC actually have two Facebook phones on the market already – the Salsa and the ChaCha, but the new one is said to have a lot better integration with Facebook. B. A.

After releasing a separate application for working with the Facebook messenger, the software team of the social network have to support two applications for Google’s platform. It seems that not only is this not a problem for them, but they have also just released a new version of Facebook Messenger for Android, which has a simpler user interface, which makes working with it easier and, because it’s lighter, the app itself is much faster, no matter if you’re chatting with just one or more people.

The new version of the Messenger also features some bug fixes and even adds support for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich – something, which is becoming more and more important, as a lot of devices are beginning to receive the Ice Cream Sandwich update. The application is available for download at the Google Play Store. B. A.

Wealthier smartphone users play less games

Angry Birds Space
Angry Birds Space

Reuters have published some interesting statistics, which came as a result from a recent research, conducted by  The Luxury Institute, about the habits of the wealthy smartphone users. There are the ones with an income of over $150 000 per year, who’s average age is 52. Employees of the research agency explain, that with age, people tend to have more and more commitments, which leave them less time to spend on things, which we generally think of as unimportant, such as games and chatting.

Despite this, even the wealthy (and elderly) smartphone users regularly use applications such as Facebook and Angry Birds, which are actually the most popular applications for 2011. Among this group of people, 45% were using Apple’s smartphones, 35% – devices, running Google’s OS and about 25% – BlackBerry’s (some of the people had more than one device). B. A.
