It seems that Android users have received their own version of iCloud even before Apple, the service is called Ubuntu One. It can be used with an app  that you can download from the Android Market – it’s called Ubuntu One Files.

ubuntu-one-files-android

It can be used for storing files from your phone directly in the cloud, as well as to instantly make a back-up copy of every photo you take.

The app also allows sharing pictures in Facebook and Tweeter or even in a blog. A free registration comes with 2GBs of storage and you’ll have to pay for extra space. The Android app itself is free to download from the market:  https://market.android.com/details?id=com.ubuntuone.android.files

New WiFi technology increases phones battery life

July 6th, 2011 No Comments   Posted in Mobile phones, News

SleepWel-wifi

WiFi is a very popular wireless technology nowadays, you can find it in almost all smartphones on the market. We all use it from time to time as it is very handy, but sadly it also drains our phone’s battery quickly. The reason it does that is that when there are a few devices connected to the same source, all of them have to download bits of the information they need one by one, and when your device isn’t downloading it has to stay awake waiting for its turn – causing the battery to drain fast. But a graduate student at Duke’s Pratt School of Engineering named Justin Manweiler has developed a battery-saving technology called SleepWell. The way it works is the devices download all of the information they need at once, and while they’re doing that the other devices connected to the source are in a stand-by mode, waiting for their turn and saving energy. So far, the test results are all positive so we can expect seeing this technology quite soon.

Skype for Anrdoid getting Video calls unofficially

July 3rd, 2011 No Comments   Posted in Android OS, Freeware, News, Software

skype-for-android

An update for Skype has just enable Video chat. Sadly, it’s just for the Nexus S, Desire S, Xperia Neo and Xperia Pro, but thankfully a group of developers have ported this version of Skype to a few other handsets – so far it’s ported to the HTC Sensation, Thunderbolt, EVO 4G and the Samsung Galaxy S2, but anyone with a device running Android 2.3 can mod the apk file in order to make it work on his device. Of course, there’s no guarantee it will work, but if you’re feeling lucky you can find a Thunderbolt – specific download at the DroidLife source link, and a more general APK at TechPetals.

Samsung Galaxy S2 overclocked to 1.5 GHz

May 16th, 2011 1 Comment   Posted in Android OS, Hacks, News

Samsung Galaxy S2 was successfully overclocked to 1.504 MHz. This speed is enough to allow it to achieve really high benchmark scores like over 4000 points in Quadrant! 1.5GHz is a 25% overclock and makes this fast phone even faster and snappier in day to day usage.

How-to overclock it:

1. You’ll need the latest version of odin3 and the USB drivers for Windows, download -  http://forum.xda-developers.com/show….php?t=1064894
2. Grab the kernel. It is a tar file for odin with the overclocked kernel and a initramfs with proper modules for the kernel: http://setcpu.com/files/galaxysii_oc_v1.tar
3. Reboot the phone into download mode using ADB:
adb reboot download
4. Flash the kernel using odin3 by placing the tar file in the PDA section and pressing “Start.”
5. The phone will reboot automatically.
6. Use SuperOneClick to root your phone if you haven’t already. ADB should have root access with this kernel so it’ll just work.
7. Grab SetCPU and try 1.504GHz.

Flash 10.3 for Android

Adobe Flash 10.3  for Android is now available for download. As we can guess, the new version improves Adobe optimization application. Among the changes is support for NEON instructions for OMAP4 chipsets ( ARM Cortex A-9 processor), which is a good news for consumers with these devices (for now only BlackBerry PlayBook tablet and LG Optimus 3D). Otherwise, among the bugs are removed and those relating to specific phones, including Galaxy S, HTC EVO and several models of Motorola. The update is compatible with Android 2.2, 2.3 and 3.0.
