Samsung and Apple looking into waterproof coating for mobile devices
One of the many technologies we’re jealous of Japanese users about is water resistance, which we don’t normally see on American and European phones, with the exception of some mid- or low-range series, such as Motorola’s Defy. Finally, though we may see top-end water-resistant smartphones, thanks to HzO – a company which is currently developing a coating, which should be able to make any device water-resistant. The company showed off their product at this year’s CES and even put an iPhone, covered with the special coating in a tank of water and the device kept on working. It seems, that this demonstration has impressed some of the big companies, as HzO have already started discussing the possibilities to implement this technology in future Samsung and Apple products. The first devices to use this cover should be expected by the end of this year, but if you want to have it on your device now, there is another company called Liquipel, to which you can send your phone and for just $60 it’ll send it back to you completely waterproof. A quad-core tablet for under $250
If the last couple of months have taught us anything about tablet, it’s that the price is one of the key factors for the device’s sales (if the device isn’t an iPad, of course). That’s why at this year’s CES ASUS showed off a device, which is not only powerful enough for everybody to want it, but is also cheap enough for everybody to buy it.
We’re talking about the Eee Pad Memo, a tablet with a Tegra 3 processor and a 7″ 1280×800 display, which is going to arrive in the first half of this year for $249. The tablet is running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and has everything you would expect from a tablet in 2012, including a front-facing camera for video calls. B. A.

Razer’s Project Fiona gaming tablet
Razer always are trying to surprise us at CES and this year’s exhibition was no exception, this time Razer shows off the Project Fiona – a tablet that is specifically designed for all fans of computer entertainment.
The new tablet is powered by Intel Core i7 processor, also has a multitouch display, 3-way gyroscope, compass, accelerometer, Dolby 7.1 audio system, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0.
And since the tablet devices are not the best for hardcore gamers in terms of usability, Razer Project Fiona has two built-in game controller, equipped with analog sticks and ultra-sensitive buttons. If you are already tempted by the idea of entertainment on-the-go with your favorite computer games, note that the Razer Project Fiona tablet should be available on the market by the end of the year at a price lower than $1,000.

iPad 3 prototype spotted at CES 2012
There are some interesting rumors related to Apple at CES 2012, one of the rumors is coming from the iLounge website, and they claims that his editor had the opportunity to play with some iPad 3 prototype.
According to the description of the device, the design is not so much different from that of the iPad 2 and it’s thickness is about a millimeter high. In addition, the iPad 3 had a camera with bigger resolution, which uses a sensors like this in the iPhone 4S, and the screen is of course with the expected higher resolution.
Other information says, that at the exhibition there was at least 250 employees of Apple, among them there were executives from Apple as Greg Joswiak, who is a head of iOS product marketing.

BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 bringing important changes this February
RIM have announced, that we should be expecting the debut of BlackBerry OS 2.0 at CES 2012 and end-users are going to receive it as soon as February. With this update, the company is going to introduce their own e-mail application and a unified inbox, which works with more than one account. Users are also going to receive a better text editor for sending messages along with the possibility to choose to automatically reply. Another improvement in BlackBerry OS 2.0 is going to be the contacts app – now it’s going to integrate information from multiple sources (social networks etc.) just like in webOS.
RIM have also improved the tablet’s integration with BlackBerry smartphones. For instance, users are going to be able to use their phone’s keyboard to type on the tablet. The tablet, on the other hand, is going to have access to the data on the phone and a couple of programs, such as Documents To Go and Print To Go are going to make users’ lives even easier. Whether or these changes are going to enough to make the tablet more popular, we have yet to see. B. A.

Sony’s next generation top phones: the Xperia ion and the Xperia S
It seems that the first “Sony” smartphones are going to hit the market very soon, as they’ve just made their debut at CES 2012. The devices are called the Xperia ion and the Xperia S, but they’re really the US and EU version of the same device with minor differences. Both devices have the same 1.5 gHz dual-core Snapdragon processor and a 720p HD Reality display, though the ion (US version) has a 4.6″ one and the S (EU version) has to make do with 4.3″.
The camera on both devices is a 12MP one with an Exmor R sensor, so it’s bound to shoot good photos and with the Fast Capture feature is ready to take a photo in 1.5 seconds. The devices both run Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but will receive an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich soon. The other significant difference between the phones is their design and while both versions have the same overall shape and size, they somehow manage to look very differently. B. A.

Lenovo with two new devices
Lenovo have prepared well for this year’s CES – not only are they releasingtheir new laptops, but they also have two new Android devices to show off – a tablet, the IdeaPad S2 10 and a smartphone – the Lenovo S2. The S2 is more of a mid-range phone with its single-core processor, clocked at 1.4 gHz, 8MP camera and 3.8″ screen. There are two versions available – a 512MB of RAM combined with 8GB of built-in memory and a 1GB of RAM – 16GB built-in memory one. The device is aimed at businessmen and therefore has an additional security system.
The IdeaPad S2 on the other hand is Lenovo’s idea of a “transformer” tablet and hardware-wise is about as powerful as ASUS’ second generation Transformer. Perhaps the most interesting thing about the S2 is its processor – it’s just a dual-core one clocked at 1.5gHZ, but that’s hardly a bad thing as it’s Qualcomm’s most recent dual-core processor – the S4 Krait, which uses 28nm technology – which means it’s not only powerful, but it’s also very efficient – it uses up to 60% less energy than the last generation of dual-core processors.
The other specs include 1GB of RAM, an IPS 10″ display with a 1280×800 resolution and two cameras – a 1.3MP and a 5MP one. The tablet also has a very long battery life, when connected to the keyboard dock – up to 20 hours. Both devices are already being sold in China, so we’re expecting them to hit the European and American markets soon. B. A.
