Behind the stage – the Nokia 808 PureView

May 22nd, 2012 No Comments   Posted in Mobile phones, News, Symbian OS

The Nokia 808 PureView is going to hit the market later this months and the Finns have decided, that it’s time to remind us the most important stuff about the device. After all, they have been working on the smartphone for 5 years and the PureView technology, which won the TIPA Best Imaging Innovation award, is going to become a vital part of the company’s future smartphones, especially the Lumia series.

To do so Nokia have published an 8 minute video, which has been shot entirely using the phone. The clip gives us information, through interviews, about the path from the initial idea – sketched on a napkin, to the final device. Throughout the years, Nokia had to develop their own photo sensor and the technologies, needed for its production, because the available ones turned out to be too limited for the company’s needs.

We first found out about the Nokia 808 PureView, a smartphone with a 41MP camera, which can’t be compared to anything seen on a phone up until now, at its debut in the beginning of this year. Back than the company announced, that its sales would begin this May and now they have confirmed this information. At first the device is going to be available in Russia and India – hardly a surprise, considering the popularity, which Symbian has on these markets and, of course, their sheer size.

We remind you that the Nokia 808 is the first ever smartphone to use Nokia’s new PureView technology, which won the award for innovation of the photography organisation TIPA. It relies on a huge sensor, special Carl Zeiss optics and complex algorithms and the result is frankly stunning. For instance, the phone is able to shoot Full HD video (despite the single-core processor) with 4x zoom without losing any of the quality – this is achieved with the usage of all of the available megapixels.

Nokia’s latest ad shot entirely using an 808 PureView

April 24th, 2012 No Comments   Posted in Mobile phones, News, Symbian OS

We’re expecting sales of the 808 PureView – Nokia’s stunning 41MP cameraphone, which was revealed at the Mobile World Congress this year, to start next month and the Finns are already preparing their marketing campaign for the device. As a result, a video ad appeared on the company’s profile in YouTube, which is said to have been shot using nothing, but the phone itself, though, sadly, it’s not available in Full HD resolution despite the 808′s 1080p shooting capabilities. Of course, most of the pictures in the scenes were probably shot in controlled environment at perfect light conditions, but as most reviews of the device show – you don’t have to be an expert to shoot a great photo or video with the PureView device.

The technology, which is used in the 808′s camera software is on its way to the company’s future Windows Phone devices as well, but if you don’t mind the fact, that the Nokia 808 PureView is using Symbian, and you’re looking for a capable smartphone with a great camera, it may turn out to be just the device, which you’re looking for. Microsoft Office for Symbian^3
Microsoft Office for Symbian^3

Being able to work with office documents on their mobile phone is vital for many smartphone users and there are a lot of office applications on the market, mostly paid, to satisfy their needs. There are, of course, some platforms, like Windows Phone, which have a built-in office app, but than again that’s only natural, considering the facts, that Microsoft is behind both products. From now on, though, the mobile version of Microsoft Office is going to be available for free on another platform as well – Symbian. The package includes Word Mobile, PowerPoint Mobile and Excel Mobile, which allow you to work with documents, while their functionality is almost the same as the PC Microsoft Office.

The phones, for which the mobile Office is currently available are: Nokia 701, 700, 603, E7, X7, C7, Oro and C6-01, though you’ll have to install the application through your computer using the Nokia Software Update, as it has yet to appear on the Nokia Store in the next couple of weeks. The Nokia N8, E6 and 500 are going to receive the application a bit later and the Nokia 808 PureView is going to be sold with it pre-installed. Symbian vs. Windows Phone

As it turns out, Symbian smartphones are selling eve worse than Nokia had predicted. After the release of the company’s first Windows Phone devices, the current Nokia-users are expected to transfer from the old platform to the new one and such an occurrence. According to the statistics, provided by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, Symbian’s market share in England is 2.4% (down from 12.6% last year), which places the platform right behind Microsoft’s OS, which has 2.5% (compared to 0.5% last year).

Still, there are also good news for Nokia – the Lumia 800 is the best-sold Windows Phone device in the UK, accounting for a total of 87% of the sales of such devices. On the other hand, Windows Phone has a long way to go until it catches up with the current leaders – Andoroid (currently 48.5%, up from 37.8% last year), iOS (28.7% up from 22.7%) and Blackberry (17.1% down from 24.4%). Along with the Nokia 808 PureView, the next major Symbian update was revealed. Surprisingly it’s not the Carla, as we thought it would, but rather “Belle Feature Pack 1″ , so it’s a sort of update of the Belle update. Still, it features a lot of improvements for both personalisation and performance. The FP1 is going to be available for the 603, 700 and 701 in the recent future and it’s going to bring Dolby Headphone and Dolby Digital Plus support for the devices, providing a better quality of sound, when connecting your device to a home cinema or headphones.
