Motorola releasing Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets in H2 09

Motorola has confirmed its is reducing its 15 supported operating systems, including its MOTOMAGX and Symbian platforms to only 3, Google Android, Windows Mobile, and its own P2K 3G solutions.

Regarding Windows Mobile and its roadmap, Sanjay Jha, co-chief executive of Motorola and chief executive of mobile devices, was quite optimistic.

“Windows Mobile 6 has not delivered the experience that I think Apple has been able to deliver, but as you look at the plan that is Windows Mobile 7 and even 6.5, I think there are significant new added features which will help the platform,” Jha said. “We have now targeted new teams which are focused – in California and Seattle – to deliver experiences. That is where we have to differentiate.”

Motorola will open a new office in Seattle “in order to work closely with Microsoft to deliver differentiation” via the Windows Mobile platform, he said.

Motorola expects to release a phone based on Windows Mobile 6.5 platform in the second half of 2009, well before an Android-based device which will only come by the 2009 holiday season.

HTC Touch Pro and XPERIA X1 in pictures

First announced during this year’s Mobile World Congress, Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA X1 will finally be shipping soon. One of the biggest questions potential buyers will have is if it matches up to the HTC Touch Pro. We’ll be answering that question later in a full review of the X1, but for now, check out some photos we took of the two side-by-side if you want to see the physical differences.

The X1 (right) is longer and narrower than the Touch Pro. The increased length is necessary because of the longer screen which has a resolution of 800 x 480 compared to the Touch Pro’s 640 x 480 pixels.

HTC Shift - how to install Windows XP

HTC Shift Windows XP TPC Installation from scratch:

Before you start:
Think first about to open the Windows Mobile side like described in HTC forum. There is a good description
“howto” do this within windows Vista.

Before you install:
- enable WLAN und Bluetooth in Vista side (if you can). (not really necessary, but maybe easier later)
- Disable USB Tool (cable in) on Windows Mobile side if you have the “opened” Windows Mobile installed
- remove SD memory Card if inserted
- Insert the HTC USB Hub with integrated Network card

HP Ipaq Voice and Data Messenger

The Data Messenger is a Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional device which features a slide-out keyboard, 2.8 inch QVGA screen (really?), WIFI, Bluetooth, Quadband GSM, Tri-band 7.2 Mbps HSDPA (European bands), HSUPA, A-GPS and a 3.1 Megapixel camera with LED flash. It has 128 MB RAM and 256 MB ROM, microSD expansion, with a 1140 mAh battery.

The smartphone is 160g and 5.7 x 1.74 x 11.4 cm, and has a 2.5mm headphone jack. Opera Mobile is bundled, as is Google maps mobile and 30 Day Trial of Webraska Turn-by-Turn Navigation.

The HP Ipaq Voice Messenger has similar specs to the DataManager, but instead of the slide-out keyboard features a 20 key suretype-style keyboard. The non-touchscreen Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard device has a 2.4 inch screen is which is regrettably also QVGA. The connectivity and GPS receiver is the same, but the device is much lighter at 107 g and measures 5.0 x 1.36 x 11.4 cm. Despite this it features a larger 1260 mAh Lithium-Polymer battery.

HTC Touch HD Pro rumours

The HTC Touch HD has not even been released yet (all info points to the 6th November) but already the Touch HD Pro speculation have started.

There is already some confirmation from knowledgeable sources that the device does exist, but so far no details are forthcoming. Based on the Touch Diamond/Touch Pro release pair, we can expect the specs to be pretty similar, but with the Touch HD Pro being slightly better specced.

The mockup above appears attractive enough, but there are many people wishing for a release of the long-awaited clamshell HTC Omni, whose specs (4inch WVGA screen, 528 Mhz processor), even in 2007, are pretty comparable to the HTC Touch HD being released now.
